GfG Green Initiatives
GfG Instrumentation strives to continually reduce the impact our business has on the environment.
Toshiba ecoStyle Recycling Program – A process for returning used toner bottles, inkjet, printer cartridge, fax cartridges, drums units and waste bottles/toner bags from from printers, photocopiers or fax machines , allowing for the 100-percent recycling of collected consumable supplies. This program both diverts waste from landfills and helps to reduce waste of valuable resources.
Toshiba Business Solutions PrintReleaf Program – PrintReleaf is a platform for automated global reforestation. PrintReleaf measures our company’s paper consumption over time. They calculate how many trees were deforested to harvest our paper footprint. Our footprint is automatically reforested at reforestation projects around the world that we choose. In other words, a tree is planted at a location of our choosing to replace the equal amount of paper that we have used.
SafeWay Recycling Program – A paper recycling program that improves the company’s overall energy efficiency. 100% of the paper that is removed through this program is recycled and is not sent to a landfill.
Call 2 Recycle Program – The Call2Recycle® collection program accepts all dry-cell consumer batteries and cell phones. Collected in a convenient box for shipping to a recycling center. When batteries are improperly disposed of, they end up in the trash where they can result in landfill, potentially releasing toxic chemicals into the surrounding environment. Instead they are converted into byproducts that are used to make new products such as batteries, stainless steel alloy and cement additives.
Gas cylinder recycle programs – Gasco’s ecosmart™ and ecoBump cylinder recycle program and PortaGas’s PortaGreen Strip and Ship cylinder recycle program both provide an easy way for our customers to return used gas cylinders. The programs utilize reusable, sustainable cylinders which can be conveniently returned. This eliminates the additional cost and work associated with traditional cylinder disposal requirements. Additionally, these cylinders are usually more compact doubling your volume with the same environmental footprint.
Advanced Disposal recycle program – All boxes are either re-used or broken down to be picked up and recycled by Advance Disposal. Recycling cardboard and boxes reduces the negative impact on forestry.
Great Lakes Recycling (GLR) scrap metal recycle program – Recycled metals account for a large part of the country’s overall supply. One statistic shows that every 2 out of 3 pounds of steel made in the United States derives from ferrous metal scrap. Any metal that can be recycled at GfG is turned into GLR for reclamation.
Environmentally friendly packing material – The paper packing material used in our shipments by Pad-N-Pak is environmentally Friendly. It is 100% biodegradable, recyclable and renewable paper. Additionally, packing material from in-coming shipments are stored in collection bins and reused whenever possible.
Use of lead-free solder – Lead is toxic and a cumulative poison causing damage to the nervous system. The elimination of lead and other hazardous substances from electronic packaging and assembly materials will continue to rise to comply with both legislative and consumer demand. GfG now uses all lead-free solder in the production processes.
Change to lead-free oxygen sensor – Where possible, mainly in the G460 gas monitor, a 5-year warrantied, lead-free O2 oxygen sensor is being used. This changeover occurred in spring of 2019.
Use of smaller shipping boxes – The size of the shipping box for the G450 and G460 instruments was reduced by 67%. This reduction in size resulted in reduced shipping costs, lower packaging expenses and less waste.
Use of LED light bulbs – Where possible, GfG uses LED light bulbs in the Ann Arbor, Michigan facility. LED bulbs have an estimated energy efficiency of 80%-90% when compared to traditional lighting and conventional light bulbs. LED lights contain no toxic materials and are 100% recyclable, and can reduce the carbon footprint by up to a third. The long operational life time span means that one LED light bulb can save material and production of 25 incandescent light bulbs.
Michigan State bottle/can deposit program – Cans and bottles with a Michigan deposit are collected in receptacles to be returned and recycled, resulting in less waste.
